Interview with Anne Schelle, Executive Director, OMVC
Hi Anne,
Q: What is the highest wall to climb in order to make the Mobile DTV competitive with the other media?
The biggest challenge facing Mobile DTV is constructing a profitable economic model that the broadcasting industry can embrace. We know the technology works. We know there is strong consumer demand. So, it’s a matter of working out the economics and selling the service to consumers.
Q: What the telecommunication world would had missed if the OMVC was not established? And what is the biggest goal you hope to reach?
For one thing, there is a very real possibility that adoption of a permanent standard for Mobile DTV would have been delayed beyond a sustainable point. When the OMVC was formed and began working closely with ATSC on approving a standard the clock was ticking: we knew we had to move fast to agree on a standard and start moving products to the marketplace. Buy-in from the broadcasters through OMVC was invaluable in speeding that process.
Q: What is your opinion toward RRD USA after more than one year of cooperation?
RRD’s role was indispensable in making the DC Consumer Showcase a success. There are a lot of moving parts in that trial, so RRD’s ability to serve as lead integrator was crucial. They did an excellent job supporting the TV stations involved in the trial and developing the service we provided to consumers.
